SURYA'S 7AAM ARIVU MOVIE STORY, RATING, PICTURES, ABOUT

STORY:
REVIEW : 3/5

AR Murugadoss' latest epic, 7aam Arivu, brings satisfaction in waves, but not consistently enough to be considered a complete success. I can satisfactorily say that the film and its ideas are very interesting, and that it attempts to explore those ideas in a novel way.  However, in between the truly refreshing and exciting stuff, 7aam Arivu is padded with typically masala styled fluff that does nothing to move the film forward and at times even opens up sub-plots that never get any closure. Despite his intention to open up Tamil cinema to new international audiences, Murugadoss becomes so bogged down in masala conventions that it can become hard to appreciate the special things about this film.

One of the film's great strengths is the beautifully shot and wonderfully evocative prologue. We are immediately spun back to 500 A.D. and to the life of Bodhidharma, the Tamil prince of antiquity who brought both Buddhism and, according to legend, the martial arts to China. This 20 minute sequence is astonishingly beautiful and heartfelt.  Suriya as Bodhidharma is a powerful and benevolent force for pure good, even when the strangers in his new Chinese home are wary of him. This flashback also brings the first major action sequence which is among the best I've seen in Indian cinema.  It is relatively brief, but the action is fast and heavy, and takes some turns you wouldn't expect. Unfortunately, once this sequence ends we spend a lot of time learning things we don't need to know.

Suriya next appears to us as a circus performer, a part of a traveling show which has found a temporary home in Chennai.  He juggles, he performs on a unicycle, stuff like that. This sequence lasts for almost an hour, and we come to find out that all of this stuff is entirely unnecessary. All it does is set up an elaborate relationship between Suriya's character, Arvind, and his co-star, Shruti Hassan's Subha Srinavasan. Their relationship is complex, however, the romantic complications that are woven into the plot serve no purpose other than to pad the film and provide a romantic interest story. I have yet to see an Indian film, even a pure action film, without a romance, and I think if ever there was a need to skip it, 7aam Arivu would be a prime example. Arvind and Subha's relationship is played for cheap laughs until it goes horribly awry in a miraculously coincidental way. Needless to say, I wasn't a fan of this part of the film, and it wasn't a fault of the performers involved, it was the plotting that was just like a lead weight holding the film back.

To antagonize the not-so-happy couple, the film employs some particularly evil Chinese villains, led by Vietnamese actor Johnny Tri Nguyen as Dong Lee. Tension between India and China is always high, largely due to territorial disputes as well as India's support of the Dalai Lama.  7aum Arivu exploits that tension and creates a Chinese villainy that is cartoonishly evil. I don't mind the over-the-top nature of the villains, though, that is a staple of Indian cinema. It is the implication of the film that the nation of China is bent on the subjugation of India as a whole that seems a bit over the line.  It isn't a subtle allegation, and it isn't some shadowy terrorist group making the threat, it is the government, and that seems a bit dodgy to me.

On the positive side, Nguyen's got the villain thing down pat after Tom Yum Goong, Power Kids, Cradle 2 the Grave, etc. He gets a few decent action sequences to flex his martial arts muscle, but the majority of his evil performance relies on him using his eyes to communicate his particular kind of power.  It works, too, Nguyen's performance as Dong Lee is one of the highlights of the film.  Apart from Suriya, Nguyen seems to be the only performer in his sequences with any kind of formal fight training.  Anyone who gets in his way just becomes meat for the grinder, but not in a way that is boring, Murugadoss has written in a few neat tricks for Dong Lee, and they keep the film interesting.

One of the film's great strengths is a creative flair during its action sequences. As I mentioned above, the prologue features just such an action sequence, and it is among the finest I've seen in Indian cinema to date.  There are a few more, mostly featuring Dong Lee plowing through some random jobbers on his way to Arvind, that also work really well.  The action choreography was nominally done by Peter Hein, the go to guy for Indian fights, but several of the sequences look as though they probably had heavy input from Nguyen, and that's a very good thing. The film's most spectacular set piece doesn't involve any fighting at all, but as an action sequence it is breathtaking, even if there are a few less than perfect CG shots thrown in. This sequence comes in late in the film, and it involves zombified/hypnotized Tamilian civilians, flying cars, an overturned 18-wheeler, and a mysteriously strong kung fu lady fighter. Really great stuff.

As I mentioned above, the pacing of the film and the padding included seems pretty haphazard.  The most blatant example comes at the end, where the film seems to attempt to wrap everything up in the last 25 minutes, when they should have cut out a lot of the fluff in the beginning and expanded on the final sequences, since they were the really interesting stuff. I would probably have had a different opinion toward the romance if it actually went anywhere, but it doesn't, it's a thread that is left untied as the credits roll, and that is a real irritant to me.

7aam Arivu is a good film with flashes of greatness. It is bogged down with commercial elements that do a grave disservice to the film we could have seen.  Will I watch it again?  Sure, there is plenty to like, but I was really hoping to see something exceptional all around. In that regard I was disappointed. However, I don't regret my time in the theater one bit.  I saw some great action, a novel theme, and a film that at times reached for something beyond that which Tamil cinema has attempted. Now, if we can just get a better editor in there, I think they could have something really special.

SHAHRUKH KHAN RA ONE MOVIE, COLLECTIONS 14.63 CRORE, STORY, REVIEW,RATING

STORY
RATING : 3/5

Story: The story is about a father and his relationship with his son. Shekhar Subramanium (Shahrukh Khan) tries everything possible to impress his son, but Pratik (Armaan Verma) believes that his father is not so cool. In an effort to impress his son, Shekhar designs a game which changes their lives. The game which was meant to be played, starts playing with their lives, marking the entry of Ra.One and G.One.

Story Treatment: With months of promotional activities, Ra.One has tremendous curiosity value attached to it. The story juggles between Sci-Fi and Bollywood drama and leaves the audience enthralled in parts. The first half depicts various shades of a father-son relationship whereas, post interval the action unfolds. However, the script tends to lose its track by making the efforts tasteless. Comparisons with Rajinikanth’s Robot and SRK’s Ra.One are bound to happen, especially in sequences built upon the same track. For instance, the train chase sequence brings back flashes of Chitti and his robotic skills, when compared with the aerial G-One.

Star Cast: Shahrukh as Shekhar is innocent, crystal sharp and natural. King Khan as G-One tries to carry the aura of superhero with immense poise, but is caged as a ‘family superhero’ rather than messiah of all. Kareena Kapoor (Sonia Subramanium), as always, manages to be easy on the eyes with her great looks and acting calibre. She also makes one realise that even in a superhero film, a heroine is a must. Armaan Verma is a superb pick for his role, as he sinks into the character perfectly, sometimes even outshining established stars like SRK and Kareena. Rajinikanth, rightly referred to as the ‘Real Superhero’ in the movie as well, steals the show within few seconds of his entry and makes the crowd clap and whistle with his mere presence.  Arjun Rampal walks away with the cake for his deadly looks and impresses as the real bad man. Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra are wasted. Satish Shah’s presence induces a few funny moments. Shahana Goswami plays her part well.

Direction: What’s noteworthy about Anubhav Sinha’s work is the fact that he has paid attention to the quaint essential bit on the technological front and also, infused the right amount of emotional dose required for the movie to be termed an entertainer. The director makes his star cast look the best, yet loses few points as the track is led astray. At the same time, Anubhav understands the demand of Bollywood fans and tries to keep all the elements.

Dialogue/cinematography/music: Dialogues are a concoction of emotions with a message which runs throughout the movie, almost forming its soul- Victory of good over evil. Cinematography is excellent, while music is decent. Chammak Chhallo, which is already riding high on the popularity chart, lives up to the hype created, while Dildaara displays the love and emotional saga between Kareena and Shahrukh.

3ups and Down: Ra.One is surely crafted as a kids’ entertainer. Compared to Chitti, the emotional side of G-One takes a hit.  SRK’s fans, who have been missing him on the silver screen after ‘My Name Is Khan’, can grab this opportunity to see their hero in a never-seen-before avatar. The movie is a joyful cinematic experience for game enthusiasts.

COLLECTIONS:

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Ra.One fails to cheer the box office on day one of its opening on October 26. BoxofficeIndia.com data indicate that the film collected only Rs 14.63 crore from the domestic box office as against the estimated Rs 25 crore.

The day one collections are well below Rs 22 crores that Salman Khan's Bodyguard clocked and on par with Rs 14.5 crores of Dabbang, the record holders. The low collections on day one is  despite the fact that Ra.One was released in 1500 screens more than Bodyguard and Dabbang and also had 500 3D screens release with higher ticket prices.

Industry observers had expected the film to break Bodyguard's records due to higher number of prints and the extraordinary hype. However, Eros International, the co-producers of the film claim that Ra.One has approximately grossed Rs 18.5 crore on the first day at the domestic box office.

According to Mutliplex officials, while the morning shows starting from 10 am were houseful on Wednesday, the collections fell from 1 pm in the afternoon at most places and did not really recover till late evening.

However, the fate of the film cannot be yet decided based on just day one's earnings. The final verdict on Ra.One will be out after this weekend. Golmaal 3 which released last Diwali grossed only Rs.8 crore, but later went on to cross Rs.100 crores at the domestic box office over a period of three weeks.

Vishal Anand, senior vice president, operations and sales, of Fun Cinemas, a multiplex chain, says, "It is unfair to compare an Eid release with a Diwali release (homes in North India generally have Laxmi puja in the afternoons on the Diwali day. This year, the muhurat was between 5-11pm. Today, (Thursday) will be the D-day for Ra.One. Print to print, Bodyguard yielded better returns."

The reviews of the film are mixed. But Anand says that it is a family film and kids (6-15 year olds) come to the theatre only with parents and they are liking the film. Komal Nahta, editor of Koimoi, a box office tracking website says: "People are overreacting to the first day numbers. We have to wait and watch." Nahta however is certain that going by the reports, this film holds no chance of breaking the record of all time blockbusters, Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots. "It is an above average film at the box office, at this juncture," he adds.

If the film fails at the box office will it be a setback for brand SRK? It is early to take a call on that say industry experts and are of the opinion that the failure of Ra.One is in no way going to affect the personality or brand value of SRK.

Sunil Punjabi, CEO of Cinemax multiplex, says that the distributors are erred by releasing lesser number of 3D prints. "Infact, we are expecting second time audience, who missed the 3D version on day one. With the kind of effects in the film, Ra.One has taken the quality of Indian movies to a new level. Family and kids will love it and we are expecting them to flock the theatres this weekend. The numbers on Thursday is certainly up there with Bodyguard". He further adds that the weekend advance booking are ahead of Bodyguard too.

Punjabi feels that there was sky-high expectation created due to the marketing hype which is one of the main reasons for the disappointment. Thursday is very strong and multiplexes claim they have collected almost one-third of first day's collection within the first two shows of the day.

According to industry insiders, when public compare Ra.One with Bodyguard it certainly is below par. But, if the movie crosses Rs.18 crores on day two, it can be termed as a hit and if it is below, Rs.16 crores it is going to be an average grosser and going by the early reports from the multiplexes on Thursday, the movie is well on its way to become a hit.

Biography:
Shruti Haasan (born 28 January 1986) is an Indian singer turned actress. Her parents are the noted actors, Kamal Haasan and Sarika. Shruti Rajalakshmi Haasan was born to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika on 28 January 1986 in Chennai, India. She also has a younger sister named Akshara, who represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing. Haasan studied at Abacus in Chennai, until 10th grade, when she moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St Andrew’s College.

However, Haasan shifted her focus to cinema and music, and eventually travelled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai.
Shruti Haasan sang her first song aged just six in her father's Thevar Magan in the composition of Ilaiyaraaja. Later while pursuing her studies in school, Haasan made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, singing a duet performing for the voice of a child, with her father Kamal Haasan, who also directed the film.Shruti Haasan's second song came in Hey Ram, where she sang the bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil. The album from Ilayaraaja, which was critically praised, won Haasan accolades for her efforts with reviewers, Screen India praising that she "has the makings of a good singer, and with some training she should go great guns".

Shruti Haasan had the opportunity to sing with veteran singer K J Yesudas for the movie 'En Mana Vaanil' under Ilaiyaraaja's music. The song was 'Roattorap paattuch chaththam'. The movie was released in 2002. She has sung in a Tamil film, for Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram under the composition of Harris Jayaraj. As of November 2008, Haasan is also midway through her untitled debut album, which she has composed, written and sung, and is set for release in mid-2009. A further song was recorded under her voice for her Hindi film, Luck.
After pursuing a career in singing, Shruti Haasan branched out a career into modelling. She started by starring appearing in the Frappe! magazine version of September 2007, since then she has gone on to appear in Verve.

In 2000, Haasan made her cinematic debut in the Tamil and Hindi bilingual film, Hey Ram, directed by her father. She made a cameo appearance as the daughter of Vallabhai Patel in the biopic of Mahatma Gandhi.
After rejecting prominent film offers, most notably the lead role in Venkat Prabhu's Saroja, reports suggested in late 2007 that Haasan was set to make her full debut as a heroine in 2008 with a movie opposite Madhavan directed by Nishikanth Kamath. Despite Madhavan admitting that the news "was premature", she signed up to the film, which was titled, Endrendrum Punnagai, only to be stalled prior to production. Eventually Haasan signed up to Soham Shah's Luck opposite Imran Khan, a Bollywood film. However, despite the film gathering much publicity prior to release, it became a critical and commercial flop.

After much speculation, Shruti Haasan is the music composer of the Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan which released in 2009, with lead role played by her father Kamal Haasan who is also co-producer of the movie under Rajkamal International. The bilingual, is a remake of the successful Hindi film, A Wednesday!, but the soundtracks of both the projects are entirely separate. Apart from this, Shruthi Hassan is also the vocalist of an alternative rock band The Extramentals.

THE TOP NEW FACES OF BOLLYWOOD IN 2011 Monica Dogra, Rana Dagubatti, Nargis Fakhri, Varun Dhawan,Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra , Ileana D'cruz, Narmada Ahuja , Arjun Kapoor, Girish Taurani, Kulraj Randhawa, Sarah Jane Dias, Vivaan Shah, Ariadna Cabrol, Twinkle Bajpai

THE TOP NEW FACES OF BOLLYWOOD IN 2011
The New Year 2011 has begun and like each year this year too, our film industry is sure to see a bunch of fresh, talented newcomers who would be making their debut.....

Monica Dogra

Probably one of the early debutants of this year, Monica is originally a singer-musician and is part of the rock band Shaair +Func. She is now all set to showcase her acting skills as she plays Shai in Kiran Rao's maiden directorial venture Dhobi Ghat. The film has been released just a few days ago and but Monica has already managed to stand out despite sharing screen space with none other than Aamir Khan. this girl would be seen more in front of the camera than crooning behind the mic.

Rana Dagubatti

Rana Daggubatti is South India's latest export to Bollywood and will be seen in Rohan Sippy's Dum Maaro Dum alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu. Grandson of Telugu movie moghul Dr.D.Ramanaidu and son of producer D.Suresh Babu, Rana impressed one and all with his very first Telugu feature film - Leader. It will be interesting to watch if this tall and good looking youngster manages to make a name for himself in Bollywood in the days to come.

Nargis Fakhri

Every aspiring actress would die for an opportunity to debut opposite the nation's latest heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor. In that respect, Nargis Fakhri is indeed one lucky girl for she not only debuts opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar but also has the super-talented Imtiaz Ali directing her in the film. Even before the release of her debut film, Nargis has been in the news for her closeness to her co-star Ranbir. If some of her pics are anything to go by, expect a scorching hot summer this May when this bombshell sets the screen ablaze in Rockstar.

Varun Dhawan

Now this young bloke's debut is among the most looked forward to this year. After all, Varun is the younger son of director David Dhawan and is all set to make his debut in Dharma Productions and Red Chillies' co-production Student Of The Year. Varun could have been easily launched by his dad himself but seems like this kid has decided to make his own mark. Nevertheless, he simply couldn't have asked for a better launch-pad. After all, which newcomer can boast of being directed by Karan Johar in a project backed by Shah Rukh Khan.

Alia Bhatt

Mahesh Bhatt was there to launch his daughter Pooja Bhatt but this time around Bhatt Senior has entrusted the responsibility of launching his daughter Alia in the able hands of Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan. Daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, Alia is the female lead in Student Of The Year, a film which is set around a college campus. The last time KJo weaved a story around a college campus, he created history with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Alia, Varun, Siddharth and Co. will be hoping that history is recreated yet again with their maiden film too.

Siddharth Malhotra

Karan Johar joked during a recent interview that 'There is now a separate Malhotra wing in Dharma productions'. And why not? After all in the recent past Dharma has seen many Malhotras being launched such as Punit Malhotra (director of I Hate LUV Storys), Siddharth P. Malhotra (director of We Are Family) and Karan Malhotra (director of the forthcoming Agneepath remake). Now yet another actor is all set to join the Malhotra brigade at Dharma and he is none other than Siddharth Malhotra who would be seen in KJo's directorial venture Student Of The Year. After assisting his mentor on My Name Is Khan, this young lad from Delhi with no filmy connections whatsoever would be more than thrilled at the prospect being launched by KJo and SRK. While he indeed has the looks to be a star, it's his acting which will finally determine how far he would go in this highly competitive industry.

Ileana D'cruz

Ileana is yet another South siren who is all set to try her hand in the big, bad world of Bollywood. She would be seen playing the second female lead in Anurag Basu's Barfee alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Born in Mumbai and raised in Goa, this Catholic girl made her debut in Telegu cinema in 2006 with the film Devadasu. Since then there has been no looking back for Ileana who has featured in blockbusters down South such as Pokiri and Kick. She is also gearing up to play the role played by Kareena Kapoor in the Tamil and Telugu versions of 3 Idiots. This girl is indeed going places and how!

Narmada Ahuja

Last year, Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi made a smashing debut with Dabangg and if all goes well, this year would see the debut of Govinda's daughter Narmada Ahuja. Even though news of her debut film has been making the rounds for a while, the project is yet to be officially announced. The buzz is that Narmada would be making her debut with a romantic comedy, the script of which has been recently finalized.

Arjun Kapoor

He is someone who has films in his DNA. After all, he is the son of Boney Kapoor, one of Bollywood's most well-known producers. 20 something Arjun Kapoor has already assisted in films such as Shakti and Kal Ho Naa Ho. He is also an active part of his father's production house and was actively involved during the making of No Entry. Now Arjun is all set to debut as an actor in a Yash Raj film and considering the lineage that his family boasts of, his debut will certainly be keenly looked forward to

Girish Taurani

Yet another newcomer from a filmy family is all set to make his debut this year and he is none other than Girish Taurani (son of well-known producer Kumar Taurani). While Taurani's company Tips has successfully launched actors such as Shahid Kapoor in the past, this launch vehicle it extra special. Girish's debut film will be directed by Prabhudeva who last delivered a blockbuster in the form of Wanted.

Besides the above mentioned names there are a few more actors such as Chirag Paswan (son of Ram Vilas Paswan), Kriti Malhotra (in Dhobi Ghat) and Nilesh Sahay (nephew of Sanjay Dutt) who would be making their debuts this year.

Kulraj Randhawa
Kulraj started her career as a model and soon landed a role in the popular tele-serial 'Kareena Kareena'. She worked in a Punjabi film 'Mannat' opposite Jimmy Shergill. This Chandigarh based girl has been cast opposite Bobby Deol in 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'.

Sarah Jane Dias
Sarah was a popular model on the fashion circuit before she tried her hand at anchoring TV shows. She participated in the 2007 Miss India contest and won the crown. Sarah who has done a Tamil film has been cast opposite Abhishek Bachchan in the film 'Game'.

Vivaan Shah
Vivaan Shah, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah's son is definitely making a rocking Bollywood debut. After all, he will be making his first big screen appearance in film-maker Vishal Bhardwaj's film 'Saat Khoon Maaf'. Vivaan plays one of Priyanka Chopra's seven husbands.

Ariadna Cabrol
This svelte Spanish actor joined the cast of Zoya Akhtar's 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' that boasts big names like Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin. Ariadna has mostly acted in TV shows in Spain and is a trained flamenco dancer.

Twinkle Bajpai
With her girl-next-door looks, Twinkle acquired fame with her performance in Zee's 'Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan'. She was also a finalist on the reality television music competition show, 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005'. She will make her Bollywood debut in Vikram Bhatt's film 'Haunted'.

Richa Gangopadhyay - Miss India USA '07
Northville, USA resident, Richa Gangopadhyay accomplished a lot in a short span of less than two years since she was crowned Miss India USA in New Jersey in Dec 2007. She recently debuted as the lead actress in her first Telugu film, ‘Leader’ which has hit the screens on Feb 19, 2010.

The vibrant, attractive and determined Richa decided upon near-fulfillment of her Miss India USA title in the year 2008, that she was going to move to India to explore the Indian film and fashion industry. Friends and family encouraged her and in Sep 2008, Richa took the big leap of faith of relocating to Mumbai to pursue the renowned acting school, ‘Actor Prepares’ of Bollywood veteran, Anupam Kher. She graduated with a diploma in acting from Actor Prepares and got her professional portfolio done by one of India’s top fashion photographers. From the day her portfolio was released in March 2009, Richa has been swamped with offers of fashion ads for billboards of national brand campaigns and TV commercials. She hopped three cities over a course of ten days doing fashion ad shoots and on day ten….March 20, 2008 which also happened to be her birthday, she successfully landed the coveted female lead role in the upcoming Tollywood film, called ‘Leader’ under the direction of Sekhar Kammula who nationally is known as a critically acclaimed director.

While Richa’s ‘Dabur Vatika Almond Hair Oil’ TV commercial with Bollywood actress Preity Zinta was airing on Sony TV channels all over India, and her billboards for Peter England People, Malabar Gold and Kalaniketan adorned large posh malls and stores in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi and other cities, Richa embarked on her first movie venture in April 2009. Leader has been produced under the well-known AVM Productions which has introduced Debutant hero Rana as the ‘Leader’ with Richa as Co-star. Rana is the grandson of a movie moghul, Rama Naidu, who earned a prestigious place in the Guinness Book of World Records for producing the highest number of films spanning 3 decades in 9 languages. Richa portrays Rana’s lady love in the movie.

The audio launch on November 22nd was a huge success attended by many celebrities and gave the public the first look at this Sekhar Kammula heroine. Richa impressed the media who calling her ‘ravishing’ and ‘cynosure of all eyes’ at the audio release event.

“It has been a wonderful learning experience for me. My director, assistant director, the crew and my costar Rana have made me feel so special in these 7-9 months. And lo behold… I learned a lot of acting….real fast. My character is a young corporate Indian woman who is intelligent, smart and confident, who's tough on the outside, but soft on the inside”. She adds, “I had to learn Telugu, in order to lipsync and give the most appropriate expressions, but Co-Director, Praveena, was like a shadow guiding me. I can actually speak pretty manageable Telugu. I really like Hyderabad and have grown attached to its warm people.” -- Richa Gangopadhyay-Actress, Model, Multi-Talented Artist
“Richa…Your resume is very impressive as you have participated and excelled in a wide plethora of disciplines. Apart from accolades in Beauty pageants you have done well in extra curricular activities. Performing in various stage shows hones one’s confidence level and readies them to face the camera. Your portfolio pictures do full justice to the immense talent that you possess.
